Italy and Russia hope to sign major economic agreements at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi said on Friday.

“I hope and I think that we will sign important agreements. I hope our positions on the issue of the agrarian sector will get closer together,” Renzi, who plans to take part in the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum on June 17, said at a meeting with young Italian businessmen.

The Italian prime minister said he had been invited to attend the forum by the Russian leadership. “I am confident that it is better to be with Russia to solve problems in Syria and Libya,” he added.

He noted the role of culture and cultural cooperation for a peaceful future. “I was impressed when after the liberation of Palmyra thanks to Russian forces a Russian conductor (Valery Gergiev) gave a concert there,” Renzi said.

The Italian delegation to the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum will include CEO from leading Italian companies. Italy will have a pavilion at the forum.
