The Customs Union that brings Russia together with Belarus and Kazakhstan has announced its decision to introduce a two-year break in levying duties on imported electric cars and commercial vehicles.

It has also approved a programme to develop a network to recharge and service electrically-powered vehicles.

The hope is the measures will create a market for such vehicles and stimulate domestic production of them.

The hybrids are exempt from the break.
