An agricultural economist says the public will be directly affected by the maize shortage facing South Africa this year.

The drought in the Free State and the North West during the previous planting season has had a big impact on white maize supplies and the continuing drought is affecting the new crop.

Maize is South Africa’s staple food.

The University of the Free State’s Johan Willemse says, “White maize meal prices will start increasing and already increased during November and December. We will see more of that in the next few months.”
