Visit of Solvent Extractors’ Association (SEA) of India delegation to China

 

The Embassy of India, Beijing organized a Seminar and Buyers-Sellers Meet (BSM) in Beijing on April 25, 2011 on the occasion of the visit of a high-level delegation of oil meal and feedstuff exporters under the aegis of the Solvent Extractor Association (SEA). The 12-member delegation was led by Mr. Sushil Goenka, President, SEA. The Seminar and the BSM which was attended by a total of 9 Chinese companies and 15 Chinese participants was organized by the Embassy and theChina Chamber of Commerce for Foodstuffs and Native Produce (CFNA).

2.    Mr. Rahul Chhabra, Deputy Chief of Mission (DCM), Embassy of India, Beijing in his remarks said that the last one decade has seen a phenomenal growth in the economic engagement between India and China with the bilateral trade reaching a figure of US$ 61.7 billion in 2010, making China as India’s largest goods trading partner. He added that while trade has seen double digit growth in the last few years, trade deficit has also been on the rise. DCM commented that for the last one year the Embassy has been pushing for greater market access for Indian exports of pharmaceuticals, IT, engineering and agriculture products and the event to promote Indian exports of oil seeds and oilmeal products, which in recent years have emerged as one of the fastest-growing components of global agricultural trade, with developing countries accounting for most of the growth in both supply and demand, is a step in that direction. DCM mentioned that India is one of the leading producers of oilseeds in the world, contributing 8-10% of world oilseed production, 6% of world oil meal export, and 6% of world vegetable oil production and that that there is tremendous market potential in China for expanding India’s exports of oilmeals; China’s oilseed imports surged over 50 million metric tons in the last few years due to continued growth in demand for oilseed by-products such as protein meal and vegetable oil.   DCM expressed the desire that the event will provide a perfect platform for businesses of the two countries to explore synergies for greater cooperation.

 

3.     Mr. Sushil Goenka, President, SEA said in his speech that India currently accounted for 8.1% of world oilseeds output; 6.6% of world oilmeal production; 6.6% of world oilmeal export; 5.4% of world vegoil production; 12.3% of world vegoil import; and 9.8% of the world edible oil consumption. He further informed that India exports about 5.0 million tons of various oilmeals annually to South East Asian markets and countries like Japan, S. Korea, China, Vietnam and Indonesia. Mr. Goenka said that the objective of the visit of SEA delegation to China was to renew their contacts with the feed millers & importers in China and to understand the present requirements, both in terms of quality and quantity in China.  Mr. Goenka expressed that India’s exports of oil meals to China have the potential to double in the next 3 years.  Mr. Mr. Bian Zhenhu, President, CFNA in his speech said that China has a large market and offers immense business opportunities for Indian oil meal and feed stuff exporters.

4.    The Seminar on ‘India-China Cooperation in Oil meals Sector’ also saw a presentation on ‘Overview of India’s Oil Meal Industry and the Potential for India-China Cooperation’ by Dr. B.V. Mehta, Executive Director, SEA. In his presentation, Dr, Mehta gave an introduction of Indian oilseed industry, various type of extraction/meal exported from India, the comparative advantages of Indian compound cattle and poultry feed and the potential of further cooperation between India and China.

5.     The Embassy also organized site visits for the SEA delegation to Beijing Dafa Chia Tia Co. Ltd., a large agro-livestock enterprise which was jointly established by Beijing Dafa Livestock Co. and Chia Tai Group of Thailand in 1986.
