MOSCOW, April 08. /ITAR-TASS/. Russia has become the main foreign investor in the economy of Central America’s Republic of Guatemala, the ambassador to Russia, Herbert Estuardo, Meneses Coronado told ITAR-TASS on Tuesday.

“Most investments are channelled into the mining industry,” Meneses said.

The diplomat recalled that Guatemala’s foreign minister visited Russia at the end of 2013, where the parties signed a bilateral investment treaty.

“This is a very important agreement, which will undoubtedly benefit each company in our country,” he said.

“Sugar, coffee and rum, which is by the way considered one of the best in the world, are exported from Guatemala to Russia,” Meneses said. “From Russia, we usually import iron ore and some other goods. But these deliveries are not as regular. One of the main problems in this connection is logistics.”

“We hope to expand our cooperation in science and technology,” he added. “Developing these ties offers great opportunities as I see.”

The diplomat said bilateral cooperation between the two countries would also benefit Russian businessmen, who would gain access to the Central American market.

“There are more than 40 million consumers,” Meneses added.
