Africa Day art exhibition: “Made in Africa – Towards Cultural Liberation”
South Africa in collaboration with the African Union (AU) Commission, is hosting the African and Diaspora Summit on 25 May 2012. In support of this historic gathering and to dispel negative perceptions of Africa this dynamic exhibition of Southern African Development Community (SADC) artists have been organised by the Department of Art and Culture.
This Africa Day an art exhibition entitled “Made in Africa – Towards Cultural Liberation” will be opened by Deputy Minister of Arts and Culture, Dr. Joe Phaahla, at the Sandton Gallery in Johannesburg and will run from 24 May to 23 June 2012. Curated by Andile Magengelele in conversation with Nontobeko Ntombela, the exhibition features leading practitioners form the Southern African Development Community.
The exhibition explores a wide variety of contemporary African issues and invites the public to participate in the discourse about these issues. The “Made in Africa” exhibition incorporates works of artists selected from the SADC region. These artists are major contributors of the African art landscape.
This exhibition demonstrates an appreciation of cultural diversity. It shows the role of visual arts in social cohesion, economic development and strengthening continental relations, the creative economy has a critical role to play in the revival of the African cultural renaissance.
While the African continent and the Diaspora negotiate solutions to the myriad challenges they face, this exhibition recognises the cultural, social and economic contribution of artists from Africa, and creates a platform for a conversation to which we are all invited. Entry to the Gallery is free and opening hours are Monday to Friday 9h00 to 17h00 and weekends from 10h00 to 13h00.
The exhibition features works of Fanck Lundangi of Angola, Pamela Phatsimo Sunstrum of Botswana, Roger Botembe of Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Samson Kambula of Malawi, Doung Anwar Jahangeer of Mauritius, Goncalo Mabuda and Mauro Pinto of Mozambique, Joseph Madisia of Namibia, Leon Radegonde of Seychelles, Blessing Ngobeni and Sandile Zulu of South Africa, Alex and Mbongeni Fakudze of Swaziland, Benon Lutaaya and Justine Igala of Uganda and Patrick Makumbe of Zimbabwe.
