Key Points
- Russia accuses the US of pursuing a 'neocolonial agenda' through tariff threats
- US tariffs criticized as violating free trade principles and targeting Global South nations
- India rejects US criticism over Russian oil imports as 'double standards'
- Russia emphasizes BRICS and Global South solidarity against US economic pressure
Russia spokesperson Maria Zakharova
Russia launched a scathing attack on the United States for its “neocolonial agenda”, saying Washington was “unable to accept the erosion of its dominance” and therefore resorting to “politically motivated” economic pressure on those countries who opt for “independent course” on the “international stage”.
Moscow further said the US’ tariff approach is against the principles of free trade, which it once propagated. “Instead, we now witness politically driven protectionism and the arbitrary imposition of tariff barriers,” Zakharova said, adding that Brazil and the Caribbean were the victims of this policy. Moreover, these policies directly interfere with the internal affairs of other nations and represents “infringement” on their sovereignty, Russia said, adding that the tariff saga could “deepen” the fragmentation of international economic system.
“Nonetheless, we firmly believe that no tariff wars or sanctions can halt the natural course of history. We are supported by a vast number of partners, like-minded states, and allies, particularly among the countries of the Global South and, above all, within #BRICS, who share this perspective,” Zakharova said.
‘Unjustified and unreasonable’ – India hits back at Donald Trump amid fresh tariff threat over Russian oil imports
The remarks come after US President Donald Trump declared that his administration will impose additional tariffs and penalties on India for buying oil and other military equipment from Russia, saying New Delhi was “not concerned” with the deaths in Ukraine.
India, in a sharp response, described the comments as “double standards”, saying it won’t bow down to “unjustified and unreasonable” criticism from the US and the European Union.
