Business Description

Founded in 1955, the Brazilian Association of Infrastructure and Basic Industries (Abdib) is a private non-profit business association. Its major mission is to help development and growth of the Brazilian infrastructure and basic industry markets as well to fortify competitiveness of the supply chain of goods and services to these sectors.

Along the last decades, Abdib has being working on actions and proposals to improve the environment for investment and business in both infrastructure and basic industry markets, and consequently to reduce existing bottlenecks to the country’s economic and social development.

Abdib gathers a large range of public and private companies that participate in all business and investment phases and steps for infrastructure and basic industry, from public service concessionaires to equipment manufacturers, from technology service providers such as engineering, construction and assembly to legal offices, financing and consultancy companies, among others.

More than 100 companies are currently Abdib members, from areas such as electric power, oil and natural gas, transportation, construction and engineering, water and sanitation, telecommunications, and basic industries (mining, steel, petrochemical, paper and pulp), in addition to investment banks and service companies related to infrastructure.

Nearly six decades of history

1950 - Abdib is created in 1955 and begins to contribute to the Brazilian basic industry development.

1960 - Abdib strongly acts to help the development of major infrastructure and basic industries projects of the decade, made possible primarily through public financial resources.

1970 - In addition to structuring projects for the Brazilian development, Abdib defends the idea of industrial and technological expansion of capital goods and well as the growth of national heavy machinery and equipment used in major infrastructure and basic industries ventures.

1980 - With the sharp and systemic drop of investment for public works and projects in the decade, Abdib proposes the return of private capital for expansion and operation of infrastructure systems in Brazil.

1990 - Abdib contributes to the creation of the first regulatory frameworks and regulatory agencies and to the promotion of the first concession auctions that mark the return of private investment capital in infrastructure and the resumption of investments in the sector during the following years.

2000 - After the start of concession auctions in several infrastructure sectors, Abdib focuses on proposals to improve the regulation system, the adoption of rules in sectors where private capital is still incipient and to improve the investment environment.

2010 - In an era where the need to accelerate investment is clear, Abdib works to provide greater agility and lower costs for infrastructure works, to strengthen the competitiveness of the capital goods industry, and to introduce the concession model in new infrastructure frontiers.
